Camp Cataraqui's Winteree - January 2001

One of the events on Saturday morning was a Relay Obstacle Course. The youth had to crawl through a tunnel, go under a couple of hoops, step on a few stepping stones, kick a soccer ball around some pylons and then pull another team-mate on a sled to the finish line. Here Jesse gives it a try.
Waiting for the Troop ahead of us to finish one of the events. Altogether 12 Troops from the Tri-Shores Region took part in this Winteree at Camp Cataraqui.
There was a Chili Cook-off at the Chapel for lunch so we prepared our Chili, some Chicken Noodle Soup, then loaded them and some buns, margarine and a jug of juice onto a tobboggan and headed down the road. The second sled is loaded with our plates, mugs and utensils. Unfortunately we didn't win, but everyone sure liked our Chili!
This is the beautiful Chapel at Camp Cataraqui where we had the Chili Cook-off and "Scouts Own" on Sunday.
The event that made most of the leaders nervous was the Tomahawk Throwing. No amount of coaxing could get Scouter Steve to stand behind the target to act as "back-catcher". Richard shows us his form while Jesse waits his turn.
The event the youth found most impressive was the Black Powder Demonstration. A variety of rifles, as well as a replica pistol, were shown. The sound of these guns could be heard all through the camp during the course of the day.
Note to Parents: There were NO bullets used in these demonstrations, only the black powder and some paper wadding .
This event required the most teamwork from the youth. The inner-tube had to be stretched and placed over an upsidedown pail so they could lift it up and carry it with the ropes. They had to take it to another pail where they had to place it on top and then remove the inner-tube. This had to be done without dropping the pail onto the ground or tipping it over.
Some free time in between the last two events let us get back to the campsite and wash up our lunch dishes.
The last event of the day was directly across from our campsite. I think everyone found out that something that had always looked so easy, actually requires a great deal of co-ordination.
After a hard day of many challenging events, the Troop takes time to relax in front of a warm fire.
