Scout Camporee
May 2001
Because this Camporee was a "Pre-Camp" for CJ'01, everybody had to hike in to the camping area from the parking lot. Here we see Scouter Vince from the 31st, bringing in all his camping gear and supplies for the Survival Kit activity he would be doing on Saturday. Although we had 3 campsites available to us, our Troop had only the 40' x 40' area to setup in because of the restrictions of CJ. The 66th London were proud to host BSA Troop #381 from Spring Mills Pennsylvania for the weekend. We were just able to get a group picture before the "vertical dew" struck. Right after breakfast Saturday morning we headed off to some activities. Here we see the Troop thinking up 2 uses for each of the more than 50 possible ingredients of the Survival Kit. Another event that required co-ordination and teamwork was this event that required the participants to maneuver a marble from one end of a maze to the other while it is being held in the air by 6 ropes. Probably the most popular place for the adults was the Hospitality Tent where you could always find some fresh hot coffee, cookies and sweets. The Sylvan Challenge.
Without the help of the leaders, the youth had to pass through 6 checkpoints where they demonstrated various Scouting talents while dragging and carrying a travois with an injured youth. At this point, Chris crosses a "5 metre wide, 10 metre deep creek with a raging current".Unfortunatley, Travis didn't make it across. As if he wasn't wet enough in the rain! After determining that they couldn't carry the travois across their makeshift bridge, they decided to try and pull it across instead with some rope. It actually worked!
After the river crossing, they had to haul the injured youth up a steep slope and then back down again before heading off to the last checkpoint where they had to tie various knots.
